Aromatherapy
What is Aromatherapy?
Simply put, aromatherapy is the use of essential oils that have positive effects on an individual. This can be done by merely taking in the fragrance of an individual oil, or blending several oils together to achieve a beneficial result.
In the world of holistic medicine, aromatherapy can be used on its own or in conjunction with other treatment methods such as herbalism, Bach Flowers, homeopathy, and other facets of holistic medicine.
Aromatherapy uses the sense of smell to trigger the body’s natural responses. Just like the smell of fresh baked chocolate chip cookies can make you hungry, certain essential oils, once heated, can help ease tension, relieve stress, and help you sleep.
Essential oils can be used in a myriad of ways:
- Astringents,
- Bath Fizzes,
- Bath Salts,
- Cleaners,
- Diffusers,
- Facial Masks,
- Lotions,
- Massage oils,
- Mineral Baths,
- Oatmeal Baths,
- Room Fresheners,
- Soaps,
And many more…
Word to the Wise…
Always keep in mind that essential oils are the purest and strongest derivative of the herb. The oil is very potent and can irritate the skin if not properly diluted in a base oil. Even diluted, they have known to irritate sensitive skin. A patch test is recommended for anyone wanting to make their own aromatherapy preparations.
Patch Test:
1 tsp base oil (apricot or almond)
2 drops of a single essential oil
Mix together and rub on a small patch of skin. Wait up to 24 hours for reaction.
Using an essential oil over a long period of time can also cause sensitivity. If you are allergic to a specific plant family, you will be allergic to the essential oil if it is related. Please, do research before using an essential oil. Yes, I have information of them on this blog, but compare my information with other sources. NEVER take what you see on blogs, websites, or pieces of literature for granted. Compare the information. Always think critically when it comes to researching information in regards to your health.
